Led Sunflowers
traveling western Europe?

I am planning to adventure around western Europe for 34 days this summer (20 May to 23 June), flying in and out of Barcelona. I am an 18 year old female traveling alone, which is why I'm not planning on going too far East unfortunately. What are some neat places that you have visited/want to visit? Right now I am most excited for the lavender and sunflower fields in Provence (what's the best time to see them bloom?) and for Barcelona. Currently my itinerary looks like I will either travel from Barcelona to the south of France up through Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, and then make my way back down the north/southwest of France or in reverse order...
so all that massive body of text leads to is that I'm really just looking for suggestions...
thanks!

Sounds like an awesome trip! You will have a blast, and be surprised how many other single travelers there are going around Europe.

First, I would keep the iternerary as you have it. June can get hot in southern France and Europe, so hitting it up in the early part of your trip and saving the north for the hotter month is a good idea.

In terms of Southern France, there are a lot of places to see, but I really recommend getting out of the big cities and spending some time in the countryside. Find a bed and breakfast or hostel that takes a little work to get too and you will enjoy it SOOO much more than the ones crammed in the city. Check out Carcassonne, it was a neat place to spend a day or two in Southern France.

If possible I would add Italy to your trip. It was VERY HIGH on the list of my favorite countries and is a safe and exciting country. We went to Florence, Rome, Cinque Terre (like every other American), Pisa, Venice. There is something awesome around every street corner in Italy, the food is amazing and the people were very nice. I loved it and would encourage anyone to go.

Germany is FANTASTIC, seriously the nicest people we met the 2 1/2 months we backpacked last summer. Munich is very cool, I loved the history and museums in Berlin! I would hit up the major cities, but also get some time in Rothenburg Aud Taber or Bamberg, some littler city that will give you some old German flavor. Outside of Frankfurt (which I thought was a boring city) Is the Rhine cities of St. Goar, Bacharach and some others that are worth taking a day or two to explore.

Switzerland is really only good if you get out of the big cities. Zurich and Geneva are nice, but look just like everything else. Hit Interlaken and take the train up into Grindelwald or some of the cities up in the Alps to get the best part of Switzerland. It's an expensive country, but worth it!

Paris is rediciulously awesome, spend a good amount of time there, at least, bare minimum 4 days. It's a must see! I would also not hesitate to take the chunnel train across to London from Paris, it only takes a hour or two and it is a neat city. I also recommend making out to the Normandy coast. The things that happened there not only changed the world, but the cities in the region were some of the prettiest I saw all over Europe. Get the Museum Card in Paris if you plan on seeing many of the sights. It will save you a TON.

Belgium and the Netherlands are beautiful, but Im not much for Amsterdam, a full day in the city and looking at the museums was enough for me. I really enjoyed going out into the countryside though. We rented bikes and it was a ton of fun.

Other than that I would recommend hunting down the hostels that have the best ratings, its worth spending the extra money to stay in fun places (at least in the cities you are planing on staying in for a longer time). In the cities that are shorter stays, I would skimp and save for some of the bigger places.

Have fun and take tons of pictures!!!!
