The general rule of thumb is a wall fountain should be cleaned around every four to six weeks; a general wipe down though would be best done every week. By doing a wipe down it will remove any dust and water marks which will not only keep your wall fountain looking good but will also minimise the amount of dust that gets into the pump. In the four to six weeks cycle it makes sense to give the pump a clean this will ensure the pump will work for longer. When cleaning the pump you need to follow two procedures first, number one, make sure the pump is switched off and number two ensure all of the water has been removed from the fountain. The best way to extract the water from the basin of the wall fountain is by using a siphon, this can be a piece of vinyl tube. All you need to do is get another container such as a bucket and then put the vinyl tube into the wall fountains basin and suck on the end of the tube, once the water starts coming up the tube then you will be able to drain the fountain.
Once the water has been removed then you are ready to begin cleaning the wall fountain. When you start to clean the wall fountain there are specialist products which can be used to clean off the lime scale and algae, to obtain these you can contact a specialist retailer and they will be able to sell you the relevant products. It is important these are used as it will stop the wall fountain from smelling and also eliminate the amount of algae and lime scale which gets into the pump. Depending on the material your wall fountain is made up of will depend on which product you use to clean your fountain. Glass and mirror wall fountains will need to be cleaned on a more regular basis, this is mainly due to the amount of water stains you will get on the back drop, if you have a stone or slate wall fountain then these are not so easy to clean as the glass ones. It is easier to use a brush to remove any stone deposits and get them away from the fountain so they cannot enter into the pump. Once you have added and removed the cleaning products be sure to give the wall fountain a final wipe down to remove any of the cleaning products that may be remaining and then you are ready to switch your fountain back on.
